A History of Preventing Losses
America’s first-ever risk control professionals
In 1793, several marine salvage specialists were hired by Insurance Company of North America (INA), which had been founded the year before. These were perhaps the first risk control professionals in U.S. history. In 1953, ESIS was formed as one of the first companies focused solely on providing risk management services, and was soon acquired by the INA Group of Companies. Today, INA and ESIS are both members of the ACE Group of Companies.
First tunnel built with not a single fatality
Today’s ESIS GRCS consultants are descended from Insurance Company of North America’s (INA’s) loss control specialists, who advised Port Authority of New York engineers and "sand hogs" building the third tube of the Lincoln Tunnel in the 1950s. The tunnel was completed without a single fatality and with few accidents, a safety record unmatched in tunnel construction history. Today, INA and ESIS are both members of the ACE Group of Companies.
