The latest government initiative to control this problem—the OSHA Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program—was implemented on March 11, 2008.

Goldman Sachs released a report in October 2007 stating that there are valuation links between workplace health and safety (WHS) factors and investment performance. In summary, companies who did not adequately manage workplace health and safety issues underperformed those who did. Investors could have increased returns over the past four years had they incorporated WHS measures in their investment strategies.
