Slip, Trip and Fall Prevention

Slips and falls are a major loss producing area. Employees, customers, and other visitors are exposed to slip and fall risks. These types of claims are the second most frequent workers compensation loss, and can account for most general liability claims in real estate, hospitality, healthcare, and retail operations. To help manage this type of loss, ESIS offers a wide array of slip and fall prevention and mitigation services.

Prevention - Physical and Operational Controls*. Losses and incidents are analyzed to identify areas of the facility where slips and falls are most prevalent to focus on areas where the most impact can be made. We then identify improvements that can be made to slip and fall physical controls and management procedures.  Slip Resistance testing can be performed on dry and wet surfaces using state-of-the-art slipmeters.  For multi-location accounts, we can conduct on-site studies to analyze the impact of floor treatments and cleaning regimens to determine if methods provide effective results.

Loss Investigation. Even the best prevention measures cannot eliminate loss. We can provide focused tools for mitigation, reporting, and investigation of slip and fall losses.  We can also perform independent claims investigations, assessing the theory of liability of the claimant against such areas as compliance with standards, slip resistance, and documentation review.

Training. Our half or full-day seminar on Slips, Trips, and Falls provides extensive detail on:

  • Slip resistance testing standards and methodologies;
  • Effective management practices;
  • Proper physical design features;
  • Successful loss reporting and investigation methods; and
  • Tools and resources.

Slip Resistance Testing. Following the protocol of test method ASTM F1679, staff certified by the manufacturer of the Variable Incidence Tribometer (VIT or English XL) can perform reliable slip resistance testing under dry, wet, or contaminated conditions.  Testing can be performed in response to a claim, employee or visitor complaints, or for preventive purposes.  We can also test flooring materials and treatments being considered before installation or application to reduce the likelihood of unsuitable material being used in your facility.

Slip and Fall Prevention – A Practical Handbook*. This handbook provides safety engineers and claims professionals with a one-stop guide to preventing, controlling, and responding to slip and fall accidents.  It provides guidelines for facility design, effective management control programs, and test methods for pedestrian safety and slip resistance. In addition to exposure analysis of high-risk operations and conditions, the handbook also describes step-by-step procedures for reporting, investigating, and mitigating incidents.  Equipped with this reference, businesses can better identify and manage factors contributing to slip and falls, reducing their exposure to these frequent and costly losses.
